Spreading the Word on Writing and Health - WRITING FOR CHILDREN IN LONG-STAY HOSPITAL CARE

Moira Andrew in partnership with Caroline Johnson

The project was designed to encourage children in long-stay hospital care to explore their feelings through writing. Some of the challenges were difficulties in planning ahead as activities depended on age, wellness and abilities of the children available and themes had to be tailored to one-off sessions. However, children appeared to benefit from familiar school-like activities. I worked on a range of linked writing and artwork themes, often providing a structure which offered success and was relatively easy to follow. Time spent on writing took children ‘away’ from the hospital environment and parents were surprised and pleased with their children’s involvement. Moira’s work was presented at the training day by Caroline Johnson from the Community and Hospital Education Service for Cornwall.

MOIRA ANDREW

Born and educated in Scotland, I am a teacher by profession, (ex-Head, ex-college & university tutor), and a writer by choice. Most of my books are intended for teachers in a classroom setting, ‘Paint a Poem’, ‘Language in Colour’, ‘Legend into Language’, ‘Patchwork of Poems’, ‘Tell me a Tale’ (all published by Belair/Folens) and others. I am a well-published children’s poet and have three collections of poetry for adults in print, of which the latest is ‘This year, Next year’, originally published by Marvin Katz Press with a second edition by Author House, (ISBN978-1-4343-2921-9). In ‘The Guardian’ Maureen Lipman wrote: ‘This year, Next year is a book of poetry about love and loss … (it) turned my heart inside out.’
