Poet sought by GP in Bath for workshops

Poet required to contribute to a half day educational event for GPs on depression (posted 16th July 2010)

Dr William House, a GP based in Bath, Somerset, is seeking a poet and facilitator to deliver some short workshops with small groups of GPs aimed at helping them to think and gain new insight outside the medical 'box'. Modest funding could be available. No date set yet but sometime in the Autumn 2010.

Dr House says:
'The format is not yet settled but in a previous event about dementia last year the 30 GPs were divided into three groups of ten and rotated around three workshops spending 30 minutes in each. The poet, Karen Hayes, ran one of those workshops - so she did it three times. Thirty minutes is very short, but it worked well with her reading several of her own poems composed from fragments of transcript of dementia sufferers' talk. It was very moving and I think it helped to GPs to feel for their dementia patients and their carers in a different way.

'I'm after something similar for depression: to help the GPs find new understandings of depression so they can put their medical knowledge in context - to have their eyes opened in the way the creative arts can sometimes achieve. The format does not have to be the same as the previous event but GPs are accustomed to short and intense fragments of learning. Other elements of the proposed study session will include short talks from a Jungian analyst and an NHS psychiatrist, a probable workshop with a clergyman/depression sufferer, and a chance to meet informally (over tea) people from a variety of voluntary organisations providing support for depression and other mental health problems.

'Anyone interested should contact William House at thehouses@phonecoop.coop with qualifications, relevant experience including in group work, and ideas for how to tackle the task. The event will be staged by Bath GP Education www.bathgped.org. A modest fee can be paid by negotiation (depending on sponsorship).'
